A permanent resident may apply to become a Canadian Citizen. To be eligible, the permanent resident must meet the requirements below.
Requirements:
- Have been physically present in Canada for 3 out of the previous 5 years immediately preceding the application
- Have filed income taxes in a minimum of 3 years out of the previous 5 years immediately preceding the application
- Demonstrate sufficient language skills in English or French
- Pass a citizenship test
Eligibility requirements differ in certain cases including for permanent residents who are either minors or over 54 years of age and adopted children not born in Canada.
Also, an individual may be ineligible to apply for Canadian citizenship for a certain amount of time if they have committed a crime.
